It has been a while since I have done one of these, but I wanted to try a new format. In addition to doing a weekly essay (which you can find here), I want to do a comment thread!
I’m trying to decide what benefits to offer my paid subscribers. I’ll have a few comments in the comment section on ideas I’ve had. “Like” the ones you would be interested in, and feel free to suggest your own!
With no further ado…
Things I enjoyed reading:
🤥 ”Trust Me, I'm Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator” by Ryan Holiday. I wrote about this earlier this year and finally finished it. It was a great read, and I recommend it to anyone working in marketing or journalism.
. As much as I wanted to believe Andrew Tate was stupid enough to leak his location with a pizza box, it was only a matter of time until someone debunked this in the most hilarious way possible.
. This was, by far, my favorite thing I read this week. Khalid is a great writer, and I love her nuanced take on culture, history and art. A professor at Hamline university was fired after showing a 14th-century painting of the prophet Mohammed. Some groupings of Muslims don’t depict sacred figures, but others do. The administration chose to impose the most conservative view on the subject and, by doing so, “has privileged a most extreme and conservative Muslim point of view. The administrators have flattened the rich history and diversity of Islamic thought.”
🤩 ”The New Gurus” a podcast with Helen Lewis. She explores all of the people who have taken place as our priests in this modern age.
😳 ”An Act abolishing diversity in Opinions” which is something I just discovered. Apparently, King Henry VIII had it with people telling him how to be Catholic, so he made it illegal to think differently from him. I’ll probably be writing about this later.
Submitted for your opinion is the disclaimer pinned to the top of my little corner of the community. It may be useful in writing about "An Act Abolishing Diversity in Opinions".
Recommendation lists — things like movies with the best historically accurate costuming, best adaptations of true stories, where to find the weird books I use as resources here etc.
I like the format and the selections.
